One of my staff has had problems with the home PC.

All of there e-mails are in Outlook Express, this PC had 3 users with seprate profiles (XP)

Unfortunately the PC has had a meltdown as the fan fell off the processor. He has asked me to recover his all of the e-mail and e-mail addresses if possible.

What files are these contained in and how easy to recover ?

PaulMThomas,

When you can access this drive, you can search for *.dbx files. There will be three locations/directories in your case one for each user (there maybe other dbx files for other apps) but look for those locations that have mail like names on the files(the dir's are usually cryptic). Back these up to your media of choice.

On his new machine with OE copy the files to a temporary location or a dir named TomsMail?? (if you used CD/DVD media also reset/remove the readonly attritribute on the destination files).

Then open OE and either import them or change the file location to the dir that you created. Do the same for the other users while logged as them.

Hope this Helps

And the e-mail addresses will be stored in *.wab files.

Look for the .dbx files in folder Windows -> application data -> identities -> (hex character id folder) -> Microsoft -> Outlook Express . They should all be there.

The address books has worked ok.

However there are a huge number of *.dbx files in a Hotmail folder within the MSN6/Hotmail/ folder.
For example:-
Archived Mail(1).dbx
Archived Mail(2).dbx
Archived Mail.dbx
Drafts.dbx
Inbox.dbx
Inbox(1).dbx

I can't seem to get these imported. If I copy them to the Outlook folder on the new PC it doesn;t automatically see them in Outlook Express.

Suggestions ?
