tHello everyone,

I just had a situation with a users Outlook Express problem. The user claims that he never keeps any email in his inbox, outbox etc BUT has it setup where he just moves the emails to various personal folders he has setup. Well, his NT profile was removed by a 1st level tech and I had to reinstall his Outlook Express and am wondering where these outlook personal folders are .... are they .pst files or am I wrong? If not, what is the proper extension for these types of files and how do I move them back into his newly installed Outlook Express setup? Remember, there was no emails in his inbox, outbox etc because he would immediately have them moved to personal folders.. Any info would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

When you say he moved the emails to a personal folder, you mean an actual folder or another .pst file (which is called a personal folder) so if you do a search for .pst files you should come up with a couple of them, the largest being the ones with his emails in them. If he moved them to a file folder, the mails have a .msg extention. And you can just drag and drop these into outlook. For a pst file you can go to File->Import/Export and choose a .pst file that you have located. And the mails will appear as they were.
Hope this helps....

PS...it would be a different thing if he is using Exchange server....are you!?!?!?! Jay~

I'm a little confused, is it Outlook Express files (.dbx) that you're looking for, or Outlook (.pst)?

.pst files... why? are pst files reserved for Outlook and not Outlook Express? hmm, the user told me he used Outlook Express BUT Outlook is also loaded on his pc. In any case, the user did state that every email he receives goes into a personal folder, which I assumed was this .pst file ( it's over 400megs ) and all other inbox, outbox (dbx files) have almost no kbytes in size.. I guess the next question is, are PST files only reserved for Outlook and not Outlook Express OR is the pst file a personal file that is programmed for both email systems....

No .PSTs are just for Outlook. They are a single compressed file holding all the items from every folder. Outlook Express uses (as noted above) a collection of .DBX files (INBOX.DBX, etc.)

Since you say the .DBX files are virtually empty, and the .PST is 400M I should say you user is being confused, and has been using OL not OE.

Your RIGHT! I went back to visit his desktop again today.. He IS using OL.. I appreciated everyones amazing input concerning this email maze!
