I have never had much to do with Outlook Express before. So these questions may be dumb.

Here goes anyway!!

The scenario. A director has a pop3 account he can access online. Thats works fine. He has now setup outlook express on his machine from home. When he accessed Outlook Express at home it showed all his email history and worked just fine. Now when he opens his email account online his email history has disappeared but is still visible in OE. Does OE download these messages. Could someone just explain how OE works. Thanks a bit confused (Its Friday afterall)

Thanks

Yes OE downloads the messages and removes them from the POP3 server.

If you want to leave them on the server then go to Tools / Accounts / Properties, click the Advanced Tab and check the 'leave a copy on the server' box.

Beware, though, as its not unknown for OE to try to download all messages everytime you check for new ones!

That only happens when there is a corrupt message or the tracking file (pop3uidl.dbx) is damaged. StressedTechie - with this setting, unless you set a time to leave the messages on the server, they will never be removed unless they are removed by using the web interface that you mentioned earlier. Deleting them in OE will not remove them from the server. So just remember to set a removal time or manually delete from the server, otherwise, eventually the mailbox will exceed capacity & incoming mail will be rejected.
