outlook express for win. XP

whenever I try to send an attachment with outlook Express it says "Messege could not be sent. An error has occured."
Then when I try to make a new messege and I click on the new messege icon it says "there was an error opening this message, an error has occured."

if anyone knows how to fix this PLEASE help.

A little chronology may help.
How did you get to XP?
Were you running w9x or w2k before?
Were you always running express?

etc. etc. etc.

The more info you feed in usually makes the solving part easier.
