Outlook Express Default mail problem

Hi, i am having a problem with OE. I cannot set it as the default mail handler. The option in the Internet control panel doesnt have it. When you try and set it inside of OE it does something but doesnt stick. It wont accept it as the default mail handler.

I think the clients section of the registry regarding it is missing or something. if anyone knows how to get it working pelase tell me.

I cant reinstall IE cos the version i have is apparently newer than the one they have on the installer. Idiots.

Any ideas???

ok i got it as the default mail handler by messing with the registry and reinstalling.

However it still wont be the client for IE6. in internet options/programs tab. Canot select Outlook express as the default mail client. Any ideas??

Look under the registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Clients\Mail and see if there is a key there for Outlook Express. This is where IE gets a list of what mail application you can select from. joegz

yeah there is a key there but its not complete.
it has mail/outlook express but there is no default value set. There si a value underneath ...

DLLPATH - REG_EXPAND_SZ - "%program files%\outlook express\msoe.dll"

I think that the default key should have something like %program files%/outlook express\msimn.exe \xxx but i am not sure.

There are also sub branches envelope/CLSID and envelope/CurVer.

If someone can tell me what to put in the key or how to get it back would be great.

The default value should be "Outlook Express". The blank value is why it doesn't show anything in IE. Add the value in and you should be able to see it after the change is made. joegz

changed the value to Outlook Express. Still doesnt work. i think its missing the /shell/open/command key, which is present in the news client bit.

In there should be the %program files% etc run thing. but i dont have one. If you do could u tell me what it says and how to put it in..lol

it says that OE is the default and is the selected client for email but when you clink on a web link with mailto etc... it says there is no default mail client.. grrrrrr

Yes there should be a shell/open/command with the default value of "%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mail

As far as the mailto link you can fix that in Windows Explorer. TOOLS - FOLDER OPTIONS
FILE TYPES
Look for URL:MailTo Protocol
Select the Open Action
and the command line it should be running is

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1 joegz
