When I try to Export messages, I'm getting "an error occurred while initializing MAPI" ??? This happens with a "clean" install and with Outlook configured as POP, "not" MAPI ! MS Knowledge Base was of no help!)

smash, I thought I was being clear in my second sentence but I guess not .....(

In my experience, when people write 'MS Knowledge Base was of no help' that usually means that they couldn't find the appropriate information (or didn't put much effort into looking - no offense).

So what you're saying is that you did clear that checkbox, restart the computer, and you still get the error? If that's true, does everything else about OE work correctly (click on a mail link on a web page opens OE, etc.)? Is OE listed in the 'Programs' tab of IE's Internet Options?

Sorry smah, no offense taken. I'm the opposite type - I search long, hard and to the point of exhaustion before I ask for help!)

To answer your question, yes I did what MS suggested and there was no change. Their tip seems to be directed at those who've configured Outlook as a MAPI. Since I didn't, I wasn't expecting their suggestions to work anyway. All other functions of OE6 work perfectly and it is listed in IE's Programs! I just can't Export. :-(

One other thing, smah ... MS says:

3.On the General tab, click to clear the "Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client" check box, and then click Apply.

This doesn't exit on mine ???

No wonder ! Just noticed that MSKB 179637 only applies to OE4 & OE5, not Outlook 6.

I've got OEBackup and it works fine! I just thought something may've been wrong since the Import/Export wasn't working .... Someone else said it only works when you're going to Win2000 or MS Exchange. At any rate, OEB has me covered! Thanks for workin' with me, smah! The best to you *

I saw references to the same thing, but haven't had a chance to verify this. I'm not sure I fully believe exactly what I saw written, that's why I haven't mentioned it. All the machines I've been at lately also have Outlook, so I haven't tested the OE only condition. I'll have to steal my daughter's computer at some point and see what happens.
