outlook express 6.0 fonts

I have attempted to change default font settings in all outgoing emails by using tools/options/compose and tools/options/read. This works for all incoming mail and sets the correct font but I cannot change the default settings for new mail. I can however change each email I send out individually. Is this a glitch??
