I have Outlook Express 5 installed on a G4 with OS 9.1,
the user is trying to send an email with an Excel spreadsheet attachment ???.xls, the user is getting Access Denied when trying to send, the user can send jpg attachments OK, I have set the user up on a PC with Outlook Express 5 with exactly the same account details, the xls attachment can be sent OK

Not being a mac user I do not understand what you mean by changing the encoding and switching to windows.

Just found out that the user was getting this message
The action could not be completed. Permission Denied.

Got round the problem, the Excel file was Excel 5 format, I have opened it up and saved it in Excel 2000 format on my PC and now the user can send it from the MAC. I am still a bit bemused by this though.

In outlook express on the mac, right underneat the attachment window you will see "encode for any computer". If you click on that, it will bring up several options for compressing the file. Mac files have a resource fork, which PC files don't. If you know what type of computer the person is using when you send the file, you have a little more control in that window. typically PC users will get TWO attachments if you don't select encode for windows. One will be the file, the other will be the contents of the resource fork, typically icons. One file will work fine, the other will not. This can be domonstrated easily by sending a jpeg or something. The pc user will get two files, one will open, one will not :)
