OUTLOOK.EXE process continues to run after closing Outlook

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 upon which I have XP Pro (with all the MS updates), and Office XP for Sudents and Teachers (with all the Office updates).

Scandisk found a lost cluster and fixed it, but ever since, when I shut down Outlook, and try to restart it, it won't come up. Task Manager reveals two OUTLOOK.EXE processes in the background. If I get rid of the backgound processes, and run Outlook again, it comes up in safe mode.

I have tried a repair of Office, and I also removed it and reinstalled it (it kept all my Outlook files and settings, so I'm not sure it really did anyhting) to no avail. Am I missing something? Will I have to reinstall Windows completely to fix this? Or can just Outlook be uninstalled and re-installed?

See if there are any useful bits in these.

Thanks, I'll try these when I get back home tonight. I don't run under Terminal Services (it's just a stand-alone PC at my house connected to my POP3 ISP via a DSL account, and to an Exchange Server via a Cisco VPN), but just for the heck of it, I'll look at the registry to see if that Resiliency key exists.

One thing I have not tried - backing everything up, uninstalling Outlook, maybe running Norton to clean the registry, reinstalling, and setting up Outlook again.

It looks like the problem fixed itself. I had bought Outlook 2002 for my former PC, and I still had the CD. So I installed that (over the one that came with Office). Kept all my folders and settings, and the problem hasn't recurred.. yet (fingers crossed)[shocked]
