I have an Exchange server situated in a data center and Outlook 2003 clients at remote sites connecting to this over a WAN. When a user at the remote site attaches a large document to a message from a server in the same datacentre is the e-mail compiled in the datacentre thereby having no effect on the avalaible bandwidth on the WAN or is the attachment sent accross the WAN to the users PC?

nope. It'll come up to the desktop and back down to Exchange. :(

However, if your user forwards an existing mail with a large attachment, it never transfers to the desktop.
