Outlook - Error message 0x8004210A 2

When downloading my emails I get following message

Task 'mail.projectcentre.com.au - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I have reformatted computer and running new office 2003... I was receiving same message using office 2002.

Internet Explorer is working fine during download so I'm aware my internet connection OK.

Any ideas welcome... Regards

Just a wild guess, you have Norton antivirus?
If so, disable it for mail and try again!

My guess:

The server requires authentication. There is a check box under Account setup for this.

Thanks for your posts but those issues not the problem it seems

Anti Virus was not installed with new reformat... just in case that was the problem

Tried using the authentican... but server not setup for that so test email (to check settings) failed

Hi,

I have the same error.....contacted ISP who says everything is OK at their end. Changed machines and it brought in mail fine on the home machine. Work laptop has same config and I updated office with SP 1 and 2. Still won't pull the emails in.....just sits there saying 1 of 8, 2 of 8, etc then errors after 8 of 8 with the same message that started this thread.....timed out Pop3 error. I also ran a detect and repair.

Any suggestions??

Thanks for the response!

I fogot to mention it is Outlook 2002 so I can only assume the second link does not apply. I had already deleted and recreated the email account anyway.

I do have NAV but disabled incoming and outgoing as well previously. Strange thing is it was working previously and nothing new on the machine since! My home desktop has NAV with check option for incoming selected and has no issues.

Missed the obvious heh?? Oh well....I did what it suggested. Deleted the profile, uninstalled and rebooted, created a new profile with a different name. I then ran scanpst over the inbox. No problems found there either.Did I miss anything??

This is a very frustrating problem......:-(

I searched the newsgroups on this and did not see any killer item.

It does appear to be related if mail is being drawn from multiple accounts, and the problem appears to clear itself without anything dramatic being done by the user after a short time.

Make sure you are current on all of your Office Suite updates.

Thanks for your help anyway. It is my work email account so fairly critical. I may not have any other option but to use webmail and download attachments that way.....

my problem ended up being an email at my isp, which had been detected as having a possible virus. This email had been stopped by isp and this email was stopping other emails from coming through.

We deleted email and all returned to normal.
Suggest check your email box through web mail and see if any old emails still exist.

Ironically I pulled in all the mails onto another account and deleted them from the server. Funny heh?

Looks like I spoke too soon but this has allowed me to isolate the problem further. Emails with no attachments go through no problems but as soon as there is an attachment, I have the same old problem! Does this give any of you guys a further indicator as to the problem??

I've no further problem with attachments. Suggest it's your isp server being heavy handed on possible virus attachments.
As I've had no problems beyond my example which fixed problem suggest discussing with isp provider. I do know my provider had to alter his setup due to the problems I had.

I discovered the problem. It was the same problem as my Outlook not receiving email attachments. I noticed a network bridge that was showing as disconnected on the server. I ran the network setup wizard again and it errored saying the network bridge was not connected. I ran the setup again and it completed. I then got setup to created a floppy and ran it on the laptop. Voila....all IE sites working again and email attachments working.

I still don't understand but appreciate all the advice!!! Hopefully this might help someone else in the future.
