Outlook email link PAINFULLY slow to open Explorer

In Outlook, after receiving an email with a hotlink and clicking on the hotlink, it takes minutes to open Internet Explorer. Once it opens, the webpage shows up immediately. But during this time, Outlook is non-responsive.

It's usually faster to kill outlook, restart it, then cut & paste the URL into another Explorer window.

Any ideas?
