Posted in Office forum, thought I would ask here instead.

I am a little confused by this procedure which I am doing for a chum.
The old pc is Outlook 2000, the new is whatever the latest version is.
Can I just copy the whole pst file over or do I have to export it in bits and if so how exactly.
I have been trying to find out how to do this for the last hour or so and just found a load of conflicting stuff.
I have a copy of Outlook 2002 here which I don't use and copying the file seems to end up with the emails intact, but no contacts.

Does the backup/restore work to a later version?
Are the contacts in the pst file? Does importing the pst file also import the contacts?
Does the backup do anything apart from copy the pst file? I.e. can I use the pst file from the old pc as a backup to import into the new one?
Any help appreciated.

First, close OL. Then copy the *.pst files to??? media or network ...find where the new OL file store is and replace the pst with this one

Second , open old OL and select file > import/export > export to a file > *.pst > personal folders > contacts > if prompted no encryption > finish

Retreive the file created and place it as accessible to the new system.

file > import/export > import from a file > *.pst > set focus to where your bak file is and import.

Hope this helps

Don't copy the .pst files to a network location. That's not supported (or recommended) by Microsoft, and is known to be more prone to corruption and other problems than a locally stored file.

Why .pst files are bad (still applies to all newer versions)
