outlook and exchange 5.5 - finding home server

when we moved an exchange 5.5 server to a new site users outlook was unable to find the server and we have to manually reconfigure

how does outlook know where to look for the users home exchange server - it obviously doesnt use DNS or not on its own what else does it use? so what else do we have to change?
