I have Outlook Express 6 at home where my wife and I each have separate identities. The problem is that, recently, mail addressed and sent to me at my address arrives in the inbox but with my wife's name as the account name. Of course, when I reply, the indication is that the reply is coming from my wife's account. I've looked through the menus and can't find anyplace to change the settings - it's really starting to bug me! Any suggestions?

TIA

Try manually switching your identities by going to Start->Programs->Accessories->Address Book and doing it in here....
then check for new mail (or send your self one) to test if that has worked... Jay~

Thanks so much for your quick reply! I followed your directions, but the File menu (in my Address Book window)doesn't have a "Switch Identities" option. It only has New Contact, New Group, Properties, Delete, Print, and Exit (Import and Export are inactive). Is that a clue as to what might be wrong?

ok....think I know whats wrong here,
do you and your wife have different accounts for logging on to the PC?? Or do you both use the same account, eg, Default, or User, or Administrator, or Your Name????
If so that that could be the issue here....

Do you both have seperate accounts for the mail,
ie, you both use mail.domain.com but different usernames and passwords, check this in Outlook....Tools->Accounts and go to the Maill Tab....see if there are two seperate accounts in here, or it the accounts are different for you and your wife by logging on as each other and checking the single account in there..... We have 6 different e-mail accounts (for various personal and business reasons), but we don't require separate passwords to log into any of them - nor do we require separate passwords to log into Windows 98. All incoming messages are steered into the same inbox, but different folders. My personal account is the default account. Connections vary between any available and local area network.

Don't give up one me .... I can sense we're getting closer!
Thanks, again, for your interest in helping.

I dont understand how you dont have different passwords for each email account? Please elaborate on how the accounts are set up...eg, are they accounts with your ISP, or are you using Outlook to check Hotmail or Yahoo! mail??

You should have to following information in each of the accounts, (go to in Outlook Tools->Accounts and for each account) check what are the usernames, and if the password(s) is/are set to be remembered. Is each account with the same ISP?? Jay~

Each account has Remember Password selected - and we use Outlook Express to receive, at home, our various work e-mail messages, as well as our personal e-mail messages, so there are different ISPs involved. I've done a test - sending a message to myself - and the problem is that the messages addressed to my personal address, and received at home through Outlook Express, come into my wife's account (in other words, her name appears in the Account column). And I can't, for the life of me, figure out where to make that change!

Im kinda confused here forgive me! So if a mail comes in sent to your address, ie, MR@domain.com, it comes in to the inbox, in the subfolder....does it go into your or your wifes subfolder? And does your wifes' name appear in the field? so that when you reply its your wife's name and address that you are sending from??
Just one thing to check on this, go to Tools->Accounts and double click on one of your accounts, check the reply address that is specified in the first tab.

OK, now!! Are you using rules to seperate the mails into different subfolders for you and your wife?? If so, they could be the problem.......

could you send me a mail from an account, and I will reply to it....then if you could reply back! That would help!
My address is jking@iolfree.ie

dont worry Im workin on it! Jay~

You weren't confused after all. You're right ... when an e-mail message is addressed to me it comes into the inbox, into my subfolder but my wife's name appears in the account field. And when I click the reply button, the message I send indicates that it came from my wife. I tested this by sending a message to myself and then replying to myself.

I followed your suggestion, checked to see what reply address was specified and there were a couple where the reply address field was blank. I completed those fields and attempted the same test (sending a message to myself) but now when I click the Send button I get an error message that the message couldn't be sent because there's not enough disk space.

This just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser.

But I have confidence in your ability to help. I'll send a message to you from the Rik Barnes account. Let me know who it looks to have come from.

I tried sending an e-mail message to you and got the same error message I described in my last post (the message couldn't be sent because there wasn't enough disk space). I deleted the data from my wife's two "reply address" fields, tried to send it to you again and got the same error message. Now I can't send any e-mail!

Hi Rik,

I got your mail to my home account, and I got it from your Name and account, I cant reply to it here, but I will when I get home....
sorry cant do much now, fairly busy in work!!!

can you not send any mails at all?? Is it a system error or error in Outlook, like could not connect to mail server or somthing...???

(PS...sorry if I dont reply to more posts promptly, but I will be out of the office on site shortly..) Jay~

Once I cleared the reply address fields from the two accounts that were originally empty (remember, I had filled them in during one of my tests) I could send e-mail again - and I'm glad to see it worked, by virtue of the fact that you received my e-mail message. Interesting that the indicated sender was me. When I send a test message to myself, the indicated sender is my wife. BTW - I referenced the error message I was getting when it wouldn't let me send mail - "not enough disk space."

What do you mean you're busy at work and will be on-site so you can't spend all your time helping me? Where are your priorities?! :}
