Is there any way to force outlook to prompt you for a password before it lets you in? - I'm thinking kind of like in lotus notes, when you start it - it does not let you in at all unless you know the password - however outlook will let you in.

We are using outlook WITHOUT exchange server - our ISP provides the mail server - so this might have an impact onthe answer.

I think the answer is "no" but i want to double check it with other folks out there.

Also I was wondering if the standard outlook features don't allow it, is there any way to code it such that it would do something like "on application start, prompt the user for a password, and let the user to the outlook desktop only if the password is validated."

thanks. How much more water would there be in the ocean if it weren't for sponges?

Just for kicks try following from Outlook Help (password):

Change the password for private keys
This procedure is only available if you are using a Microsoft Exchange Key Management server.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Security tab.
Click Change Settings.
Click Password.
In the Old password box, enter your current password.
In the New password box, enter your new password.
In the Confirm new password box, enter your new password again.

Scroce,

I may not understand your request, but here goes:

<<You don't need an Exchange server to make this work; it works w/ all versions of Outlook I've encountered.>>
In Outlook, right-click on "Outlook Today [Personal folders]
and select properties. On the General tab for Personal Folders Properties box select "Advanced." When the Personal folders box pops up, select "change password". You'll be prompted to put in the old password (blank if none), the new password, then once more to confirm. Close all windows incl. Outlook, then reopen Outlook. You will be denied access w/o entering the password you set earlier. NOTE: the first time you use the new password Outlook will prompt you to input it twice; thereafter only once is necessary.

This is one of the security measures we use here; the password you set will be attached to the .pst file for the user and not just the machine (if you store .PSTs on a central server for backing up) So if you open the e-mail from a dif. machine, the same password will be in effect.
Don't forget the password! It's a pain to crack into Outlook w/o it....

Good luck,

Matt

cool - i appreciate both of your responses. I tried something that sounded similar to what you have written, but it kept allowing me to get into outlook. I wasn't able to poll the pop3 server for new mail, but it would allow anyone in to see mail previously downloaded.

I'll be visiting that location of my company next week and i will try your suggestions and post back. How much more water would there be in the ocean if it weren't for sponges?
