Anyone know why this would happen. I'll try to describe the situation a little better.

I use network solutions to host my email. I have been using this forever without a problem. Network Solutions uses POP3. Recently on the road i opened outlook and I it started downloading all of my existing emails about 3000 emails.

I have seen this once before with another user. What a pain it was to parse out the duplicate emails. This user was using a POP3 account OS XP Pro SP3 and Outlook 2007

Not sure if this has anything to do with it but I'm using Windows 7 - all the latest updates.

My first thought was that my .pst file somehow got corrupt or maybe to large. I attmpted to go track down the file and check it's size. Not so easy in Windows 7.

Does anyone have any idea a) what would casue this to happen b) how I can prevent it from happening and c) how I can access my .pst file in windows 7.

Update

after a reboot. i launched outlook and recieved an error message stating the outlook file couldn't be located. closed and reopened outlook and now it opened how-ever now it tries to downloaded the meassages onces again. Also i was able to locate the pst file however something is def wrong. the file is only 424 MB. Should be much larger. I assume the pst file got banged up. Here's the thing that i dont understand. If the pst file is only 424MB suggesting that some component of the file got corrupt. How is it that all of my email is still abailable via outlook. does that mean that i have 2 pst files somehow?

This is a common Outlook issue that people usually choose to work around instead of fix.

If you do not need the messages saved on the email server, then the best workaround is to uncheck the box in your email settings that is to leave a copy of the message on the server.

Then once Outlook gets a message it will remove it from the email server, so that Outlook cannot possibly download it again. It will also remove all the previous old ones.

I have the same issue that appears to be as you stated. I leave my messages on the server when I check my mail from work and then they come off when I get home. The biggest thing outlook seems to get confused by is if I have multiple copies of the same E-mail on the server. In that case for some reason outlook does not realize I have already seen the message and downloads it over and over until I go in with my webmail client and delete the offending message off the server.... If you're keeping 3000 messages in limbo on the mail server that's gonna seriously suck if outlook keeps downloading them.

Funny thing is I also grab my POP3 mail from Gmail via outlook and this doesn't happen. it downloaded all the messages once I first set it up, but now it only downloads them once....

I believe that is because of how Gmail handles messages once they have been downloaded to Outlook. Although you are technically leaving them on the server Gmail moves (archives) them to the "All Mail" folder. Since, when using POP, only the Inbox and Sent Items folders are checked Outlook finds nothing to download after the messages have been downloaded the first time.

Hope this helps.
