Hi all,

This is a strange one.

I have a user who uses a VPN to pick up their email from a remote office. They use standard Microsoft VPN.

When this user opens Outlook 2007 it just freezes up and is unusable. The only option is to force Outlook to close.

If I remove the network connection I can open Outlook ok and open email messages ok.

I have performed a check and repair of the OST, but this made no difference.

I have logged onto the same laptop as another user and everything works fine, so that indicates that the VPN & Network Connection is working fine. It also indicates Outlook is ok.

I have logged onto another laptop as the same user and this work fines also, which indicates all is ok at the Exchange end.

So this problem seems to be specific to this particular user, on this particular laptop.

This used to work fine, until this morning.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? Is there some local settings which are local to the user logged onto the laptop which I can check?

Thanks in advance.

Try creating a new profile for the user.

Hi all,

This is very strange. I tried creating the new profile, but this made no difference.

I spent untill the early hours looking at this in our office.

I found that after uninstalling AVG, Outlook sprang into life and all worked ok, which indicates the AVG plugin being at fault.

As I needed to return the laptop early this morning so it could be used I installed Kaspersky so they have protection whilst I arrange a conveinent time to investigate AVG.

I tested the laptop here and Outlook works fine.

I returned the laptop, the user has taken it back to their remote office and guess what?! Same problem?!?! Outlook freezes when opening it!!!!

They also use the VPN to access a SQL Server, shared drive and sync offline files - all of these are fine!!!

This is very annoying, any ideas anyone? I'm going across to have a look in a few hours and would appreciate any ideas!

Thanks.

Does he have a roaming profile? If so, it may be worth creating him a new one and testing.

A long shot, but have a look at his off site IP Addressing. Do an ipconfig /all and see what you get. Maybe his router is giving out the same range as the remote office, causing potential conflicts?

I may be talking you-know-what however ;)

Hi,

No he doesn't have a roaming profile (although he used to, a while back!).

The remote office is a different subnet to the HQ.

There is another computer in the same remote office which works fine on all fronts!!!

Anything you can think of?

Thanks in advance!

Log on as the other laptop user you mentioned in your first post.

Reconfigure that user's outlook to use the problem user's credentials and test.

If it works, then your best bet would be to create a new user account on the laptop for the problem user?

This is so so so strange!

Went to site today and the first thing I did was disconnect the LAN and use my 3G connect instead. This way I could test that it wasn't the local LAN causing the issue. 3G did the same, therefore it wasn't a LAN issue.

I then thought I would go from the begining, so I once again recreate the mail profile as a starting point, and this worked fine!!!

The problem is now resolved?! Can't tell you why though!
