I posted this in the Office forums as well. I wanted to post here in case it is a problem with something on our Exchange server. Getting an error when trying to open files attached to a calendar entry. The error that I am getting is:

calendar.jpg

Does anyone know why this is doing that? I read that it could be the temp folder needs cleaned out. Tried that, still doesn't work. Also read to add an exclusion list in the registry under the security key. Still does not help at all. This is happening on a domain running Exchange 2003. All permissions are what they should be as far as user permissions. This problem is not happening with Outlook 2003. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

Just to add on to this, OWA has no problem opening attachments so it has to be something with Outlook 2007.

I tried that but still no luck. As mentioned, I believe it specifically has to do with Outlook 2007 as this issue does not happen with Outlook 2003.

Make the user a local admin. Does that fix the problem? Is the Temp folder in Docs and Settings? Is the attachment saving to OLK3 folder?

Yeah I am a domain admin and cannot access this information. I've tried clearing out the Temp folder in both Windows and user Local Settings directories. As far as it placing in the OLK3 folder, I cannot tell because it doesn't even attempt to open a save location. As soon as I doubleclick on the attachment is when the error occurs...not during the save process. I've checked all 3 locations during an attempt to open the file (when the error appears) and there are no temporary folders holding the file.

I now have confirmation 1 person is able to open the files attached, but they have the same permissions assigned as others in that department.

Some more info that might prove helpful:

I took a spare laptop we have here and did a factory restore on it. I installed Office 2007 and setup Outlook to sync with Exchange without being on the domain. Outlook had no issues.

I then deleted the outlook account and joined the spare laptop to the domain. I recreated the account and their were no issues.

On my main computer I uninstalled Office 2007 and any related updates found in Add/Remove. I reinstalled Office 2007 and the problem still exists.

I am getting ready to try uninstalling Office 2007, clearing any registry entries I find for it, any leftover files on the comp, etc.

Ah, but have you cleared the OutlookSecureTempFolder? This is often the root casue of attachments failing to open in Outlook.

And whilst it usually resides in one of the Temp folders it is given special treatment by the OS and does not show in Explorer (even if you have set your view to show both Hidden and System files), so clearing out the Temp folder won't clear out OutlookSecureTempFolder

So, you need to look at the following key in the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security

and locate OutlookSecureTempFolder value, copy the string, click Start/Run and paste the string into the Run dialog. This will open the secret folder for you in Explorer and allow you to delete the contents.

Yeah unfortunately that has been done. I should have been a bit more specific when I mentioned cleaning out the temp folder.

Ok, so I tried uninstalling Office 2007, clearing any registry entries I find for it, any leftover files on the comp, etc...and it was still no help. I'm not sure what is causing this to happen. The weird thing is they can right-click on an event shown in the calendar and select View Attachment(s) and they open with no problem. It only happens when you open the calendar event and try to view the attachment that way.

So this could be related to their mailbox. Might be worth exmerging it out, removing and exmerging back.

Yeah I would try that if it was one user having this issue. It's currently everyone (about 7 people) having this issue. Only one person is not having the issue.

So trying that solution for one person might show whether it fixes the problem?

Sorry for the delay, was taking some personal time off. That did not resolve the issue. I'm still at a loss on this. Just to recap and cover some points

- Problem does not exist on Office 2003
- Only 1 person is not having this issue while rest are
- OutlookSecureTempFolder has been cleaned
- Office has been uninstalled/reinstalled
- Fresh laptop install and fresh Office 2007 install works
- Mailbox Ex-Merging did not help

Does anyone else have some ideas why this might be happening?

What exact process did you use with exmerge?

Does removing the profile work?
