Hey guys,

sorry to raise this question yet again but i'm stuck really bad...

I'm running Office 2004 over a VPN connecting to a Exchange 5.5 and when i started outlook it kept on coming up with Outlook is trying to retrieve data from Exchange server.

Well i reinstalled Office, cleared registry, reinstalled and the same god damn thing and i cant even work whilst it does that and after about 3 mins it just says disconneted. Yet i can see all my e-mails in the inbox, therefore it IS able to connect to Exchange initially.

The funny thing is that i have 2 another XP machines in the office with 2004 and they have NEVER had this problem... I have compared all the setting and they all match, yet that one bugger is being really annoying... Please help guys!

NOTE: WINXP Pro with Office 2004 > Watchguard soho routers > NT4 Sp6 with Exchange 5.5 SP1.

Best Regards

Hi

A user of mine had a similar issue (although she was never able to connect) She hard coded the ip address of our WINS server and was able to get in. If you do not have a WINS server I would suggest updating your Hosts file to resolve the DNS name of your mail server

Outlook 2004 is probably setup in cached mode (basically offline mode for Outlook 2000). It will take a while for the ost file to be created and synchronize especially over the VPN. I would try to synchronize and let it sit for a long time depending on how big your mailbox is. Or try changing it off cached mode (not recommended), but this would probably take even longer and be slower on a regular basis.

I too have the same problem you described. On my network I have the full range of Win9x/Office 2000 to WinXP/Office 2003 users, and at the beginning only my Outlook 2002/2003 users had this problem. Now as time has gone by no one is immune to this "requesting data" error. In Outlook 2000 there is no message displayed, there is just a long delay. I don't have any anti-virus scanning on the Exchange Server itself, just on the client, so that is not the problem. I've tried running WinXP/Office 2003 with no virus protection at all, and the problem persisted. I deleted my WINS server, and started it over, no help there. I've destroyed user profiles, deleted mailboxes, and recreated to no avail. It doesn't matter if you have 1 e-mail or 10,000 in your mailbox. I run WinXP/Office 2003 on my machine, and I've tried cached and non-cached, and there is no relief. I monitor several threads that have identified this problem, I'm hoping one of these days someone will find the answer and post it.
