outlook 2003 on vista-- runaway process?

Have a laptop running Vista and Office 2003 (student edition). I just installed Office SP3 the other night... now whenever the user goes into Outlook, after opening a message, the cursor blinks back and forth between the arrow and hourglass and the CPU jumps to over 40% utilization.
It does have McAfee 11 running which the on-line advisor shows as uncorrupt...and M$ KB is of course no help.

Any ideas?
