I'm having 'the' issue with Outlook not repsonding after a few seconds of opening it. I have seen some posts regrading this but never any fixes.

Problem started in Outlook 2000. The current PST file is at 512,000 MB - kinda big from what I understand. I don;t think I been archiving correctly. I'm not concerned with the mail as much as my contacts, notes, etc., but I do have these backed up on 2 Pocket PCs.

I have tried to upgrading to 2003 SB. Did the MS updater for Office at that time. Things worked great for 3 days and then the same thing happened again. I have tried creating a new PST file with no luck. I was able to get in and disable some VBA options. Nothing. There are no COM addins.

Problem also seems to be more common when trying to read certain emails - in the end, I can not view, delete or move them as it alwlays causes a hang.

All other Office apps work well. Don't want to move to some other email client as I need to sync with the PDAs.

I've been contemplating reinstalling the OS freash and reinstalling all apps, but trying to avoid that.

Sometimes get an error message saying something about a Exchanges server problem, but I do not have an Exchange server.

Any help would be appreciated.

i would like more detail regarding the exchange error.

one quick troubleshooting step: if possible, start up outlook without the PST file -- see if it does better.

reasoning: occasionally outlook has to "reindex" or read the pst file from start to end, meaning outlook appears hung while its reading the 512mb of data. if you have a hard drive access light, and if pst is attached, look at the access light to see if its going solid when outlook appears hung up- that will tell you its reading the pst file. there is no workaround to this behavior other than to not use the pst file.

second guess: if outlook is configured somehow to be looking for an exchange server, it will def. hang for up to a minute until it times out and gives up looking for the server. .....

There is no HD light when it stops responding. I was attempting to get mail today and it hung half way through the load.

If I double click on the Outlook icon in the sys tray, the bubble says "Outlook is not repsonding. If you are using an Exchange server email account, you can cancel pending server requests by clicking the Outlook icon in the notificatiosn area, and then clicking cancel server request." When I go back to Outlook, the hour glass takes the place of the pointer and you can not clink on anything.

One thing I did notice it my task manager was that noth WINWORD.exe and msworks.exe get loaded. Maybe nothing...

Outlook appears to be hooped even worse now because it can't load the last email it tried to download prior to freezing. Freezes immdiately now where as I used to have 15- 20 secs of navigation. I'm trying to get into my mail account and attempt to disable them.
