Outlook 2003 distribution list problem.

We have combined all of our contacts list as one in the Public folder as a master client list. Since we did this, our distribution groups are now working. their appears to have been a link cut between the users and the contact list folder. i can see all the users, but I double click on them and get the message that the user cannot be found. It then makes the contact a simple e-mail address contact entry. It used to open up the users info in our contact list so we can look at the address an phone number.

Does anyone know how to repair this without having to reselct every single user?

maybe to help clarify, when you hit the update now button in the distribution list, where does it update from? We have our contact lists on the server in the public folder. it appears to not go there although it is set as our default contact list to use.
