Outlook 2003 client - Sent Items partially Missing

I have a user who has experienced a very strange problem. For some unknown reason his Sent Items are now missing a lot of email between 2005 and June 2008. The user has confirmed that he has not deleted anything. He's not the type, low maintenance user.

Archive settings are off, no orphaned PST files, nothing on the exchange server indicating a problem with his mailbox or the server. I've also checked his deleted items recovery and it contains no data.

Has anyone ever seen something like this? are there any known issues with OL2003 that can cause this?

Is it a block of e-mails or just certain ones from certain users, or with certain criteria? If the latter, filters are all that I can think of... check to see if he has his sent items filtered. If not, I'm at a loss.
