I saved my Outlook.pst and extended .dat files before I formatted and re-installed WinXP Pro. Everything in Outlook works great, all messages, all folders, all still great. I can open the Contact folder but when I start a new message and click on TO:, it gives me the message: "The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or do not have permissions. Anyone?

Right click on Contacts on the left side bar, Properties, click on Outlook Address Book tab, make sure the Show this folder as an email Address Book is clicked. Then go to Tools, Services, Addressing, select the correct Contacts to show first. Create a New Mail Message again and make sure it automatically selects the right Contacts to display the addresses.

Go to tools-email accounts.Select from Directory view or change Existing Dirctories or address book .Next.
Chose Outlook Address Book and click Change. If you find an additional Contact folder here delete it. (before doing all above better save contacts by exporting to a backup file or rename it in case you delete one by mistake).
Now You will get address book correctly on clicking To or CC while making mail.

Both of your advice helped, I ended up deleting both, (I had 2), Outlook address books and then I checked the box to make my Contact folder my Email addresses, and now it works. Thank you.

YEs, Thanks, And for the ones afraid to delete the Address book, dont worry it wont be deleted, the contacts folder is still intact when you come back to Outlook, Save a copy of the contacts folder b4 you do any operations.. just 2b on the safe side

ndrew...just to be on the safe side, for all others viewing this message. The item being deleted is actually a service. Effectively it's a service being stopped from use within the program. You cannot delete the contacts folder as this is one of the mail programs main folders (version dependant - but later versions this cannot be deleted) Items within contacts have to be selected and can then be deleted, but the folder cannot be deleted outside of outlook (and you shouldn't be able to within outlook either)

Do not confuse the address book with the contacts. The address book has a .pab extension and is an extra service that can be added. The contacts does not have this, but both perform the same function.

Good idea about the back-ups though.

Good luck
