This started today! And it used to work fine. >:-<

Whenever I click on a hyperlink sent to me in an e-mail, like the kind we get if we ask for notification on a post, Outlook just hangs and if I look at Outlook in task manager it says it is "Not Responding".

IE and other programs running seem to be OK (multi tasking works!).

IE can be started alreay or not either way it fails.

I have to kill/restart Outlook to get back to Outlook. I can copy and paste in IE so the links/sites aren't particularly slow or anything. Also, Outlook does stop responding, it's not just slow.

I'm always tweaking things on my system but I don't remember doing anything recently that could have caused this.

I suspect this is an IE problem really but one never knows!

Anybody got any ideas?

The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.

Does it make any difference if you SHIFT + CLICK on the hyperlink and then direct the program to the browser executable? joegz
"Sometimes you just need to find out what it's not first to figure out what it is."

It's a long shot, but try running the IE repair tool in
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs

Simple but can be very effective at solving minor glitches

joegz,

It worked to use the shift+click method and now it is working with just a click again. Did this fix/set a setting somewhere in options that may have become unset somehow?

kwunder,
I couldn't find a "IE repair tool" in Add Remove Programs, IE was installed on my system with XP. In Add/remove Windows Components the only option seemed to be to remove IE. Is this repair tool something that is part of a "standalone" install of IE?

Thanks for the help folks. It's working again but I would like to understand why it broke. X-)

What it should have corrected, I believe, was the URL file assoication for the HTTP protocol. joegz

rjkrash,

I believe it does usually come with standalone installations, but here is a trick I was once given which worked for me.
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE OUTCOME !

This is totally undocumented, but should work if you're running Win98SE and you want to restore or repair Internet Explorer and it doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs or under the Tools Menu of System Information.
Go To :-

Start>Run, type regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\IE Setup\Options
Right-click on Options and choose new>DWORD value, name it AllowUninstall, right-click on it, choose modify and give it a value of 1

Or navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup
If there is a value named DisableRepair, highlight it, right-click, choose modify and change its value to 0. Go to View>Refresh, close regedit, then click on an empty area of the desktop and hit F5.

Now go back to Start/Run, and type in
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance

Post your findings

(If your not willing to have a go, just download and install IE6. I don't regret doing it.

kwunder,

the good Lord knows I am rarely hesitant to tweak anything on my system but...

The reg hack you suggested was for WIn98SE and seemed to apply to IE 5. Do you think it applies to IE 6 as well?

I have neither of the keys you suggest above. Nothing in Add/Remove, and nothing under System Information > Tools.

I already have IE 6 which was installed when I UGed to XP Pro from Win2k Pro, actually I believe I had IE 6 on my system before the UG but I assumed I got the latetest and greatest witn XP. Yes?

From IE help>about my version is:

6.0.2600.000.xpclient.010817-1148

I am not really hesitant to DL and install a new IE6 and I may just for the heck of it. But, this is as you say a long shot. I am intrigued, however, what a "repair" of IE 6 might do.

Your thoughts ...

I'd download it for sure.

Here is a link to download the setup file

You have to download the 497kb setup file first. When you have done that, double click on it, accept the aggreement, select the second option (Customise your browser), click next, select FULL from the dropdown box, then CLICK the ADVANCED button. From there, select DOWNLOAD ONLY and click next, THen you'll be given a choice of which OS you have, then it will download as a full prog to wherever you select. This is the best way because you can re install it whenever you wish without having to log on to Microsoft's site everytime.

This should then give you your remove/repair features from add/remove.

Tell Me how you get on

Well that didn't work. The setup program reports that I have a newer version already installed and quits!

I'll root around at MS and look for a version I can control.

Tell you what - If you find a newer version than the one Microsoft advertises for people to download, then tell everyone where you got it.

Always tell people you are only trying to help.
