outlook 2002 hangs during information store b/u process

after hour workers started reporting Outlook 2002 client no response. this was during the time frame when the Information Store was being backed up on Arcserver 2000 SP4, Exchange 5.5, NT4 SP6a. other Outlook 2000 and Outlook 97 users report no problem and logs indicate they are accessing the Exchange server.

one theory was that it's the pst file. but Arcserve gets a violation lock error and skips that file AND to test that theory, the users pst file was moved to the local HD. same result hanging during Information Store b/u process.

any ideas?
