Just had a new laptop at work and we are running Outlook 2002. The folder list is not ordered in alphabetical order, and I have never seen it not so. I am used to running with my Outlook Today folder at the top of the list, and my personal folders below it. Because I have a lot of personal folders, my Outlook Today folder has now disappeared off the screen and I find it a real pain to have scroll down to get to my calendar.

Have trawled through the options, but cannot find anything that allows me to sort this list, and our IT folks don't know - Any suggestions anyone?

Cheers

A similar thing is happening to me...please let me know if you find a resolution.

Excuse me, but are you talking about the folder list, or the Outlook Shortcuts? In Folder List, all folders (Inbox, Sent Items, personal folders) are sub folders of Outlook Today, and are alphabetical. I have never seen them otherwise. I even tried to move them into non-alphabetical order, and it would not let me.

The Shortcut List however is not. It can be sorted what ever way you want.

Nope - I mean the folder list ie all the subfolders, the thing that as you say is ALWAYS aphabetical and you couldn't change it if you wanted to, only this time it's not :-(

Not just my machine either, it has happened to a few other users since our tech refresh, although on some the problem appears to have simply rectified itself after a bit of time. Mine, as is the case with some of the others however, is still hosed.

The problem I'm talking about is on outlook, utilizing exchange server 2003. In the folder list, Archive folders, Outlook Today, Personal folders, Public folders, etc., are usually in alphebetical order. However I have them in reverse order (ie. Public Folders is first and Archive folders are last). Is there a way to change the order of these parent folders?

Hello, just wondering if you had any luck resolving this issue. I had the same problem start today with 2 users who have just both got new HP machines, 1 is a laptop 1 a workstation. Both using Outlook 2000 on Exchange 2003. XP Pro SP2. I also have a new workstation same config and am not getting the problem.

Would love to hear any fixes.

Thanks.

Sorry, I was never able to resolve the issue except for recreating the Outlook profile and even then it wasn't a guarentee that it'll fix the issue. I never found out what the cause was either.

Me neither I'm afraid :-(

I would like to see the answer to this one too. I have a user who would like to change the order of his outlook listing. Archive folder, personal folder, outlook today, public folder.

The best I have been able to figure is that you can change the name of local folders in this listing. Archive folders and Personal Folders would fall into this category. For example: If you change the name of your archive folder to "Z archive folder" by right clicking on the folder, selecting properties, and then choosing the advanced option, you can move this folder to the bottom of your list. I believe you could do the same thing with the folders on the server but those changes would have to be made on the server.

I've searched for the answer for a while and finally figured out a fix.

1. Log on to the computer that the user's Outlook profile is located on. Make sure that Outlook is not running.
2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click either Mail or Mail and Fax, as applicable.
4. Click Show Profiles.
5. Click the profile that you use to access that mailbox.
6. Click Properties, click Exchange Server, and then click Properties again.
7. Under Mailbox, type the users display name exactly as it appears in Exchange manager or ADUC. In my case it was Lastname, Firstname.
8. Click Check Name.
9. The alias name is resolved to the new display name of the user.
10. Click Apply, and then click OK.

I hop it works for you. I've tried it on 3 different computers now with success.

I believe you are talking about outlook today plus having your own PST files. Outlook XP and 2003 automatically Alpha these files. So you have to rearrange the files by changing the PST names. There is no real fix for it that I have found. To change the PST names you can do the following:

Tools - Options - Mail Setup - Data Files - Double click the the PST and then where it says Name change the name there.

Run into this many times. Folder list gets all jacked up. Ive found that by hitting registry you can get them resorted in alphabetic order, so personal folders displays at bottom. While logged in as user w issue, Regedit>HKEY CURRENT USER>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS NT>CURRENT VERSION>WINDOWS MESSAGING SUBSYSTEM>Profiles. Then in user profile section of registry look at keys. There are some which no longer have mailbox - listed before the email address name. In mine address is stephen.d.wilson, so I found key w Wilson, Stephen D. Then I opened the edit string option and input "mailbox - " in front of my name. I had to edit 2 keys, all places where the reference to "mailbox - " is missing. Then close registry and hit Outlook again.

Thank you Hemihd !!! We have had 2 people in our office with the same issue. I went to both their machines and changed the 2nd of the two strings to have mailbox - in front of their name and that seemed to resolve the issue. I have been looking for an answer now over a week. Thank you again !!

Come baaaaccckkkk. :)

Can you walk me through exactly what I'm looking for please. Happy with the registry - Can navigate to the profiles, but then I come unglued. I see two folder under profiles, one called ken and one called outlook. Within each of those is a multitude of gobbledygook named folders.

As I trawl through those I can see a number of references with my name on it, but I can actually see three different versions of my name:-

wright, ken (EXP)
wright, ken
ken

The first is how my email address appears in the address book on the system. Not sure on the others. If I right click on the wright, ken (EXP) and select modify then I can edit this string. Is this the string you were referring to, and if so are you saying i just modify it such that instead of

Wright, Ken (EXP) it reads
mailto:Wright, Ken (EXP)

I just can't actually see my email address, and wasn't sure from your note whether i was supposed to.

Jtanberg - You might want to give Hehmid a star for that answer, and if it makes mine work I'd give him a dozen if i could. :)

Cheers

If your profile name is Ken then go under that one and it will be within one of the gobbledygook folders.

Ok where you see your 3 in the registry. Double check but the first two regisrty entries will be 06 10 00 00 and 21 00 00 00 If you see your mailbox wright, ken in there you want to put the mailbox - in front of it. I beleive the one that just says Ken is the name of your profile or maybe your pst and the first one should not have mailbox in front of it.

How do you add stars to others posts. Sorry new to this forum.

Hope this helps !!

I think I figured out the star thing and gave Hemihd a bunch of them. Thanks again

Thank you rjs2. I had reloaded my laptop and started getting that exact problem in Outlook 2000. I never had that probelm before and I tried and tried and tried and tried and couldn't figure it out. Strange enough I thought I did use the Check Name button before, but it must have been as I was creating the profile and not afterwards. But I followed your steps and it worked perfectly - now my Outlook Today folder appears first, then my Personal Folders and then the Public Folders. Heeee haaaaa!
