When I type names in the To: section of my Outlook mail client, some names automatically complete or suggestions are given. This list does not match my contact list I have. These names that are stored in the auto-complete list, are they visable?? I am using Microsoft Outlook XP (2002). Is there a way to pull all my address into this auto-complete list or at least view it? Some of the names that are in my contact list will not be suggested, even though tey should. It seems once I actually send a person an e-mail, their name is added to the auto-complete address book. Any ideas?

Search for Check recipient names in Outlook Help.

Quoted from Outlook Help:

On the Tools menu, click Address Book.
In the Address Book dialog box, click Tools, and then click Options.
In the Show this address list first list, click the address book you want to appear first in the Show names from the list.
If you want a Contacts folder to appear first, you must select the Contacts folder name, not Outlook Address Book.

If pro is the opposite of con, what's the opposite of Congress?

That is all set correctly. For example I can send an e-mail to user.name@email.com. The name will not be added to any of my address books as far as I can tell, however when I go to send an email and I type in the name "user" his address will pop up. However, if I add the name Joe Smith to my contact folder and try to address a message to Joe SMith, it does not auto-complete his address. The only way it will complete it is if I manually check the name. So I have two questions, the first is where is that user.name@email.com address being stored and is it viewable, and how can I get the system to auto chek against my contacts. It is currently not working... Thanks

Again I point you to Outlook Help see Troubleshooting Address book for several informative entries particulaly "It takes a long time to resolve names in my e-mail messages"

As to where the user.name@email.com is stored I'm not sure I'll hunt around and see if I can find out.

I think the first part is figured out. The problem was theat it only auto completes if I type in the first name first. If I try to type in the last name, it does not work. Is there a way to changing that? Meaning, if I have a user Joe User (email address will be joe.user@email.com), If I type in joe u, it will auto complete. However, if I type J User or just user it does not work. But if I do a manula check address it finds it immediately. This tells me that the system is smart enough to find the correct addresses, just that the auto-check is not set to check address that way, so is it possible to change the way auto-check checks for addresses? I know I am asking a lot of goofy questions.... thanks for the help!!!

No problem on the "goofy questions". I enjoy helping/learning, I learn new things every day by helping others.

As to the way it works: I think that it depends on the "Display as" setting in the contact form, under the email address entry. I think this is taken from the "Full Name" field concatenated with the "email address".

I'm still trying to figure out where OL save the emailed accounts that are not in my contacts list. My bet it is in the PST somewhere and that there is no way to display it. It is an interesting question though and I'm gonna keep looking. :) If you found this helpful let us know by voting below.

I think I found where the names are stored. I think they are kept in a file outlook.nk2. Outlook 2002 maintains a nickname list that is used by both the automatic name checking and the automatic completion features. The nickname list is automatically generated as you use Outlook. It is nearly unreadable by a text editor and must be a "private" database readable only by Outlook itself.

Interesting.

There is an article about fixing it if it becomes corupted.
