Outlook 2000 - Zip Code formating

Following the import of several thousand contacts into Outlook, the zip code data was formatted with a decimal point and three trailing zeros. Two questions: 1) How can I prevent this import error in the future? and 2) How can I efficiently fix the zip codes rather than editing the field in each contract?
