Outlook 2000 - Unopened items icon in systray

I have XP Pro with outlook 2000. Just starting yesterday, the little icon in the systray that lets you know that there are new items that are unopened in your mailbox. When I go there, there is nothing new. When I open my mailbox, after about 2-3 minutes, it will appear.

Anyone ever heard this happenning or know what can be done to fix this? (without a complete reinstall of Outlook)

I apologise if this is a stupid question, but have you made sure there are no new messages in other folders than the Inbox, i.e. new messages that are being moved by rules?
This has been the cause every time I have seen your problem in the past...
