Hello,

Using XP/svce pack 2 with outlook 2000.
I have internet access!

My email has been working fine for ages. Suddenly cannot send email now, recv OK. Get error code 0x800ccc0e.

i have disabled all my fire-wall stuff!

when i check "netstat -an" I'm supposed to get ports 25 and 110 listening? however i get ports 135 and 445?

Also tried "TELNET COMCAST" my ISP and i get cannot open port 23?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Brian

No, not unless you're running a mail server on your own computer.

Check your mail server settings & check with your ISP. Are you connected to the same network as the mail server - sometimes mail servers are configured to not allow you to use them unless you're connected to the same network.

Hello again,

I have a question regarding my email port assigments.

I have for years always used ports 25 and 110. Now I have changed them to 465 and 995. It works now using these ports.
When I run "netsat -an" I get ports 135 and 445?

How come this has happend, curious.
Your thought would be appreciated!

Brian

There seems to be some confusion about "ports" in this thread. The mail server uses whatever ports you see listed in your mail client software (usually 25 for smtp & 110 for POP3). The mail client makes connections to the mail server's ports 25 & 110. These ports should not be open on your personal computer and really have nothing to do with the computer that you read e-mail on.

The netstat tool checks what is listening (open) on your computer & will not show you anything about a remote mail server. If your mail server is set to use different listening ports, then your mail client needs to know what ports to connect to. Your ISP must have changed the mail server's listening ports for some reason. You'd need to ask them why.

As for ports 135 & 445 - a little googling will show you that these are used for Windows File & Print sharing.

Hello,

Just and update on this thread...."cant send mail to my mailserver[Comcast]".
Turns out that I had to change my port assignments to 465 and 995.

Can anybody show any light on this. I have had ports 25 and 110 for at least three years.

Brian

Once again: you need to ask Comcast. Who told you to use those port numbers - did you just keep guessing different numbers until it worked?

just for info... they are the same ports used for GMAIL.

Interesting, thanks for info. I've never used Gmail's pop & smtp settings.

gavinbr, is that how you came up with those particular port numbers? I don't see anything on Comcast's site that indicates any non-standard ports.

Hello, again,

Thanks for your input.

The new port assignments I obtained from a Comcast Forum on their web site. They had a section dealing with just problems for email.

Its almost impossible to get good tech support out of comcast! They don't support Outlook anyway!

As I had mentioned earlier I have had the same port assignments for some years now.

Brian
