Outlook 2000 Check for new mail on-Does Not Work for Internet E-mail

I am using Outlook 2000 to access my email from an internet email account. I want to have it check for new mail every 5 minutes while I have the program open. I have checked the checkbox in the options menu, but it still doesn't work? Is this a known problem or has any one else expreienced this?
