The local MIS department can't seem to help me with this problem. Every morning I receive an attachement from the shop floor. It's a simple excel document attached to an email. No else that I know of has this problem. The attachment appears normal in the email (daily accountability.xls (46 kb)). If I use the preview pain and click on the paper clip to open it the OS opens folder c:\winnt\system32. If I try to save it I get an error stating "Outlook cannot save the URL to a file. Path does not exist. Make sure the path is correct." If I open the email in a seperate window and right click the attachment then select save as it errors out with "Cannot save the attachment. Can't create file:Daily Accoutability.xls. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder." I'm trying to save it to my desktop folder. This problem only happens with excel attachments from this user, every other attachment is fine. Everyone else in the building can open the attachment without a problem, even if I send them my copy.

I'm running Outlook 2000 sp-3 (9.0.0.6627)
Microsoft Windows 2000 5.00.2195

I'm totally locked out of everything by the Lord of MIS.

Silly questions time.
Do you have problems openign any other excel files when you double click on them?
Have you tried saving the file to another location where you definately have permissions such as your my documents folder ?
Can you create other shortcuts etc on your desktop?

No other problems with any other attachments, excel or otherwise.

My documents doesn't work either.

I just tested it to be sure and noticed that File Type drop down box says "all files" it's the only selection available.

My desktop is littered with shortcuts. I have free reign over it.

I had the same problem, Falcon, with one of my users. And, while tring to troubleshoot his issue, another user began to have the same problem.

In my situation, the Outlook user only has this problem opening an Excel Document from a certain user(s). The problem propagated when this user forwarded the Excel Document to another user so that it could be opened and printed. This user THEN began having issues.

It was not a virus for the Excel Document is a standard form that has always been in use. Why the sudden change? Dont know.

My solution, before things got out of hand, was to re-format the entire computer. I tried removing Office and registry entires. Even tried upgrading Office. No good. Fortuantely for me, I have an extra computer that I could let the users use while I formated theirs.

I'll be keeping an eye on your post here to see what solution you come up with. I would have kept researching this issue if another user hadn't of started having problems too.

GL to ya.

Glad to hear I'm not alone. I'm beginning to think I'm crazy.

I've forwarded it to another user in my office, but he could open it with out a problem.

I also forwarded it to MIS and they had no problem. They run XP though.

No problems opening the attachment here at home on my iBook with Excel for OS X.
