I have a mailbox that is owned by 6 users. Is there a way to avoid items being "marked as read" in EVERY one of their Outlook Inbox instances when the FIRST person reads that new item? TIA ------------------------

If the mailbox file (*.pst) resides on a server, you can have everyone set an option on their own PC for this account. Go to Tools, Services, select the e-mail account and choose Properties. Choose Advanced tab, then check the boxes Leave a Copy of Messages on server and choose Remove from server after xx days/months/etc. That way the message is still on the server and appears new to each person who shares the account and retrieves it on their own PC.

I am taking a guess what you are describing here is that the Preview Pane is on and when they access a mailbox the first message gets marked as read because it is displayed in the Preview Pane.

If so, you can discontinue the behavior by going into TOOLS - OPTIONS - OTHER - PREVIEW PANE and uncheck the option "Mark Messages as read in preview window". If you want to be real sure uncheck the second option as well "Mark items as read when selection changes"

Or alternatviely turn off the Preview Pane altogether.
