I have 30+ clients connecting to an E2K server, 3 of the machines are Win2k occasionally on starting outlook2000 a error message is displayed saying the exchange server is unavailable, if I click retry all works ok. To my knowledge it has not happened on the Win9X machines (same client).
I have used the RPings utility which works withouy a problems I can ping the exchange server by ip address and netbios name. On the client mapi profile I can put in either the IP address or Server name and it resolves it fine. I have set up the same user up on a win9X machine and the problem does not occur.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

HI.

This is probably a DNS issue.

* Check DNS configuration on different clients.
All clients should be configured with your W2K internal DNS server, not with ISP DNS servers!
* Check DNS configuration at the server, and also verify that there is an entry in the internal domain for the Exchange server name to ip mapping.
* Try using a HOSTS file on a problematic test client.

Also check WINS.

What network protocols are used in your network?
Can you ping the server by name? (not only RPC ping, but also "normal" ping).
How is name resolution configured?

Thanks for those thoughts,

No DNS configured but Wins is, You can ping the exchange server using its netbios name Nbtstat works ok as well, no problem once connected, it appears that it is only affecting win2k machines with sp2 applied, the other win2k and win9x clients are fine.

Thanks for your help

Mike
