At what point is my MS Outlook 03 have "too many" messages?

It's been freezing lately. I have archived some folders with 10k messages in them, but still, the freezing continues.

Does archiving really help? I dont want to delete. Do I have to?

The email is on my PC, not a server.

Thanks

I ask myself that same question everyday [thumbsup2]

Ok, seriously, how big is your personal folder?

Have you tried re-creating your mail profile (it can get corrupted sometimes)?

Do you have your messages organized into folders or is everything in your inbox?

Is your mail coming from a POP3 or IMAP source?

all mail is organized into folders. mail is coming from my domain.

how do I found out how "big" my personal folder is?

what's "recreating" a mail profile? deleting it, and re-entering the email, password, smtp? you think that would help speed up outlook? i doubt it but worth a try i suppose....

Right mouse click personal folders, properties, folder size.
To re-create mail profile:
1. Export existing folder to a pst file.
2. Control Panel, Mail, Show Profiles, then delete existing profile.
3. Launch mail again to re-create the profile. Profiles can sometimes get corrupt just like user profiles on a machine. I'm not saying this is your problem, but I have seen it occurr and deleting/re-creating is easy as long as you backup (export to pst) you existing mail, and know the account settings.

You lost me when you state "mail is coming from my domain."
Is this Exchange or are you just POP'ing off an ISP or do you have an internal mail server your POP'ing off of?

cajun, sorry i'm sort of a newbie on the terminology...:)

let me see if i can explain a little better...

i have a website. i pay for hosting for this website. my outlook downloads the mail from my host. my outlook is a POP/SMTP account.

I will definitely try to re-create the mail profile.
QUICK QUESTION - will I need to re-set up all my RULES if I re-create? As you can see per my previous post, ALL my mail is in folders, via rules.

Before I started this thread, i moved ALL emails with attachments in my SENT and DELETED folders into ARCHIVE. My outlook still freezes on occasion.

Right now my personal folders size is: 648,265kb. (Archive folder is 2,648,840kb. These messages are not all "old". I now have rules moving mail with big attachments to the Archive folder).

Any more help here is appreciated.

Ok...
1. Your personal folder size is fine.
2. I have had weird issue in the past with rules before as well. Rules are great, but I have had issue in the past with them. You can export the rules from the rules wizard:
3. Is this an upgrade from Outlook 2002 or previous? Or was this a new install of Outlook 2003?
4. Have you tried running Outlook in safe mode and seeing if you have the same lockup issues? Might be some add-in from some program causing you fits.
"oulook.exe /safe"

There are known issues with performance when the total number of items gets too big. Key folders such as Inbox, Sent Items, Tasks, Calendar, etc, should not have 10,000 items in them. You'll certainly have problems, as Outlook then needs to regenerate all of the folder views each time.

>3GB of email is a LOT of email. But the total number of items in folders is more likely the cause.
