Outline Numbering Scheme Script

Hello All,

Does anybody have a script to edit and maintain a Numbering Scheme as show below:

Number Item
1 Parent1
1.1 ChildofParent1
1.2 Child2ofParent1
2 Parent2
2.1 Child1ofParent2
2.2 Child2ofParent2
2.2.1 Child1ofChild2ofParent2
2.2.2 Child2ofChild2ofParent2
.
.
and so on ...

The Number(s) are already given at initial load.
I want to be able to change the Numbering scheme automatically when I shift an item from left to right.

Assuming Child2ofChild2ofParent2 is shifted to the left, the list will now show:

Number Item
1 Parent1
1.1 ChildofParent1
1.2 Child2ofParent1
2 Parent2
2.1 Child1ofParent2
2.2 Child2ofParent2
2.2.1 Child1ofChild2ofParent2
2.3 Child2ofChild2ofParent2**

** This actually becomes Child3ofParent2
