Outgoing Email Scan SLOW

My outgoing Email scan is taking a very long time to complete. I sent a one-word Email to myself (subject read "test", body read "test") and it took 75 seconds for Symantec to scan the Email.

I'm using Outlook 2002 and Norton Antivirus version 9.05.15.

Can someone suggest what I can do to speed things up? TIA
