outer joins between hotfiles

Is there any way of producing outer-joins between two hotfiles, WITHOUT including them in the catalog? I can produce an inner join between two hotfiles, by equalling a data item from each report within the filter of a new report (ie Reference Hotfile 1 = Reference Hotfile 2), but this removes any items that do not match on both sides. I want to be able to show blanks where a record doesn't exist. Please! Any help would be appreciated!

AFIAK there is no way to replicate outer join syntax in a filter statement.

Why do you want to do it this way and why can you not create the join in the normal way.
