Outbound Only Trunks 1

Is there any way to configure a Merlin Magix System to have Inbound only and Outbound only trunks? I would like to configure few lines to be Inbound only and few other lines to be outbound. How do I do this? Can I be directed to documentation that explains this? I have a Merlin Magix R3 configured in a Key system.

Thanks,

I am not sure what you mean by inbound vs. outbound only trunks.

If the trunks are all 2-way - then you cannot do what you want in "key" mode - except to train your users AND use autoline select - so that when they pick up their phones - the desired "outbound" lines are selected first. Then label the "inbound" only trunks as such on each phone and instruct users that if an "outbound" line is not available - they are not to make a call.

You can also remove the "inbound" only lines from each user's phone - and leave them available ONLY on the operator phone - so she can route inbound calls - and maybe one or two other phones can have a "cover" button for the operator. That way only the "outbound" lines would be left on all phones (buy the operator) - so they cannot call out on the "inbound" lines.

In Hybrid/PBX mode you can specify which trunks will be used for all outbound calls - and you would simply not include the lines you want to be "inbound" only.

Your other alternative for "key" and/or Hybrid/PBX mode is to get true DID (direct inward dialing) trunks from your Telco. These lines are one-way and cannot be used for outbound dialing - but you would need to add a DID module in your system.

If you have only one "hunt/roll over" group of lines, incoming calls usually come in on the main line first, if it is busy, then they come in on line two, etc.
You would need to have the telco break your hunt group after x number of lines. This would then make them your "incoming group". You could do reverse autoline select on the phones to have your callers go out on the now non-hunt lines only. This would make these lines the "out going" group. Callers could still press an "incoming" line button and call out. In the key mode you have limitations, but basically if you want a phone to be able to answer or make calls on a particular line, it needs to be on the phone. There is no clean way to restrict in key mode on a line by line basis. At least in my experience.

You can consult the System Planning document and/or the System Features document for ideas, programming info and limitations.

Also you can change how the lines/trunks are configured from your service provider. You can have some lines configured as incoming only or as outgoing only, in addition to the previously mentioned hunting options. Depending how you want this to work, you may find a solution even in key mode.

Hope this helps!
