outbound mail to addresses with accented characters

When we send messages from our Domino server to addresses that have accented characters in them, they don't go out. Are there settings on the SMTP server that control or allow sending to email addresses with accented characters?
My domino server is v8.5.1 fp2 running on Windows 2003 Server.
