out of view objects not selected

I'm using a crossing window to select objects using keyboard co-ordinate entry. However objects beyond the screen view aren't selected. (If I zoom to extents and then use the same crossing window, AutoCAD selects some objects which don't even touch the window! The accuracy is greater when you zoom in though.)

Anyone got any ideas why I can't accurately select objects out of view?

AutoCAD uses the display list for many functions (like BPOLY) so if an item is not in the display list it may not be selected correctly.
