After install of rdhat7.1 after reboot, I get a mesage "out of scan range' where I should normally have got the graphical login prompt. One mistake I did was that during the installation, I used a different monitor and after installation I am using a different one. How do I set this right.
Thanks.

If you can telnet to the box, run Xconfigurator or XF86Setup.

Bill.

That helped.
I fiddled around the sync frquencies until I hit upon the right one. Is there any other way of knowing what frequency (horizontal/ vertical) is best for your computer assuming that you do not have any documentation.
Thanks.

Hi,

You can run the 'Superprobe' utility (/usr/X11R6/bin/SuperProbe) which is provided with the main 'XFree86' rpm to get video card info and for the monitor you can try 'xvidtune' to tweak the monitor parameters. With XFree86 4.x many of the drivers will check if the monitor is DDC compliant and dynamically query the monitor for its info. Otherwise you can look in the XFree86 MonitorsDB file which lists an enormous number of monitors and their parameters. You can use that if you know for sure what it is and Xconfigurator didn't recognise it. Its best to pipe it to 'grep to search for stuff. For example to find dell monitors :

$ cat /usr/X11R6/share/Xconfigurator/MonitorsDB | grep -i dell

Take care when setting the frequencies as excessive frequencies can actually blow your monitor !

Hope this helps

You could have telnet into your box and brought it down an init level or two to get you to command line. From there you could run the Xconfigurator to automatically probe your system.

In the /etc directory, I found only one X11 file but that didnt have any bin directory.
and $ "cat /usr/X11R6/share/Xconfigurator/MonitorsDB | grep -i mymonitor" doesnt list my monitor.
???????????????????????
