Is there a way that one can set up out of office, or a server side rule that acts like out of office that will NOT send a auto-reply if the message meets X requirements? For example, If I want an OOF reply to go to everyone except john@doe.com is this possible?

Thanks in advaince.

No, because the OOF happens at a higher level than the mailbox.

Keep in mind that it's generally considered a VERY BAD IDEA to have OOF enabled to the Internet.

You're best to deploy a smart host and configure your Exchange server to use it to deliver internet mail. With a smart host like Mail Marshal or Mail Sweeper you could delete the OOF messages based on a criteria before they are delivered to the destination.

While it's considered best practice to disable OOF to the internet, some management demand it (as is the case with the company that I currently work for).

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I don't want it enabled, fought hard to keep it disabled, lost the fight and almost got fired for insubordination because of it. Have to make the best of the hand we delt.

Does anyone know where I can find the documentation stating that the "Best Practice" is to disable "Out of Office" replies to the Internet. I am trying to pursuade management not to make us turn it on. I believe that the management for IS doesn't necessarily want it on but is being pressured by other departments.

I'm sure Googling it will come up with some info. Among them is it increases spam to both the person with the OOF, and any person who's email is in the OOF message. It also shows that you're not in the office, but the message will say when you will be, which is a physical security concern. There's a bunch of issues.
