Could anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the MDR Buffer box with a PC?
I would like the end result to be: the PC would collect and store records directly from PBX to its hard drive.
Then display records using Access or Excel.
If this is possible could someone describe to me what is required, and how to enable it.

YES IT'S POSSIBLE, JUST NEED A SERIAL PORT FOR THE PC, I WOULD SUGGEST A GOOD TERMINAL EMULATOR LIKE PROCOMM INSTEAD OF HYPERTERMINAL. JUST SET UP THE BAUD RATE, PARITY AND START AND STOP BIT.

It's possible, realize if the PC goes down for any reason, you will loose records; and you will need some way to convert the raw data into a format that Excel or Access can use.
