Ok, I am in the middle of budgeting for new phones at some of my schools. I am already getting the 3300's under e-rate, but I need to get handsets for later this year. So here's my question. I want handsets that have built-in speakerphone (full duplex), can get XML applications delivered to them, and of course work correctly with the Mitel 3300.

The vendor is quoting me the Mitel 5330 phones and that's fine; however, is there another phone, maybe by another manufacturer, someone has used without issue that they could suggest that might be cheaper?

I'm making an assumption that any SIP phone would work on a 3300 and a Cisco 7906G would be cheaper than the Mitel 5330, so I've got to believe there's something out there cheaper than Cisco.

What functionality besides XML are you looking for?

Keep in mind a SIP based set is used to replace analog, single line sets in terms of functionality. With 8.0 UR3 multiline SIP has been introduced but only allows up to two lines.

I guess I'm not sure. These are going to be used in the classrooms for teachers to be able to call the office, the other classroom ext(s) with maybe some type of restriction on that, have access to xlm apps over phone, use the phone for paging and intercom, receive a transferred call from the receptionist, a few of the phones might be DID, but most won't since I'll put 5330's in for cafeteria, nurse, etc...

I don't know what other features I might lose that I would need between a Mitel phone and a SIP "other" phone.

Is there some features in particular I would need for that scenario (classroom phones), where I have to have the Mitel?

For classrooms I'm not sure why you are not looking at the 5302 - why do you need xml features with a large display in a classroom?

I only ever see large display phones in Cisco's marketing material. We have very rich counties where I live, yet they do not fall for the "you need a large display in the classroom" marketing speech.

I would put in 5302s and be done with it - they will provide everything you need for a teacher/emergency purposes.

Can the 5302's access xml apps? We are looking at doing a few xml apps down to the classroom level.

The 5302 is a two-line phone ONLY. It has no display at all. It is meant for retail, lobby, educational and public verticals/industries/locations.

I personally think it is the best device for the classroom. Other areas should have atleast a 5212 at min.

If you really want a SIP endpoint that has decent functionality for your classrooms, look at the Polycom 320/330. I have a bunch of them running. Decent phone with LCD at a good price. This is exactly what I am going to be looking at in my schools.

I will use 5330/5340's and 5212/5224's for admin sets and other key areas but classrooms certainly do not need to have them.

Will you really use any XML applications? I thought about that as well and quickly realized that they really aren't that practical for my situation and I didn't want to waste taxpayer money on something that sounds good but isn't really useful.

Just my 2 cents.

The main xml app I was going to deploy initially was a call recording app from asctelecom.com

Issues in the past in regards to threats, inappropriate comments, etc... have caused legal issues for our district. With handsets being the major cost investment in the system, I'm just trying to future-proof as much as possible.

In addition, the large display is not a necessity... the Cisco 7906G phone does not have a large display, but can access xml apps.
I'm just looking for something along those lines that is compatible with Mitel and at a better price point.

Huh, well if you can find Cisco phones at a better price then a Mitel, buy it!

I'm just using the Cisco phone as an example. It just seems that Mitel doesn't offer a lower end xml capable phone. I am still evaluating if I need xml on the phones or not to have access to the call recording software. If it does not, then I'm definitely going with the 5302's, but I just find it odd that it's so hard to find a low end xml phone and of all manufacturers that do, it's Cisco.

If you need XML you cannot use Mitel's phones period. It is not supported.

Are you saying all Mitel phones or just the lower end models like the 5302's?

Ok... then I'm at a loss. Am I just thinking wrong about applications to the phone. Are they not all xml based or is that just leftovers in my brain from my Cisco days?
I feel so confused.

Mitel phones have not supported XML for a number of releases. Mitel phones do support HTML. Cisco supports XML.

I wouldn't really give it a second thought. Just buy Mitel phones.
