Have my trusty (old and tired, just like me) iMac with OSX 10.1.5 which is working just fine. However, I wanted to run Filemaker Pro version 5 and, of course, it needs OS 9.1. I have 9.1 - but can't figure out how to install it without blowing away the 10.1.5 installation and starting over from scratch.

Am taking a week off of work so have the time - just not the energy to reinstall everything on this slow machine.

Is there a trick to booting this system up in 10.1.5 and then somehow getting 9.1 installed? Everything I've tried has resulted in an error message - telling me that, to install 9.1, I must have 9.1 installed ...

Kind of like repeating oneself over and over redundantly again and again more than once ... :)

Thanks in advance as always.

You should be able to boot from the OS9 CD and install the OS from that CD. Simply choose not to format your hard drive and you should be fine. OS9 and OSX are totally different animals so OS9 should not be writing over OSX. Installing OS9 should not take more than an hour. There's no need for a week vacation. Save that for a real vacation.

Thanks for the information. Thought I'd tried to boot from the 9.1 CD but maybe I didn't hold the 'C' key down long enough or something ... or my memory has finally gone from too many years of PCs and Micro$oft problems.

Appreciate it!

i cant really validate this, but i'm pretty sure ever since i had to update my firmware to use OSX, i have to hold the Option key while booting to boot to cd, instead of the C key.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
