OSPF supports manual redistribution between routing protocols only. A default route is a route used when there are no entries in the routing table for the destination network, therefor the packet is dropped. Use default routes to overcome this problem, they also reduce overhead and prevent routing loops.
Lets go over something here. The most common usage of a default route is as a gateway of last resort. In other words, I have no idea from my route table where this packet goes but I do know to send to the next supernet or next hop.
You can set up a default gateway a few ways. One is the very common static route of 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 <next hop>
But in answer to your question, OSPF can be told to generate it's own default gateway based on some calculations.
