We are running ospf in our Network and have multiple speed links like 100 mbps to 10 Gbps. When we have links avilable as 1 Gig and 10 Gigs, and we want the 10 Gigs to have the least cost, what options do we have?

Is manual cost setting a good idea or should we rely on auto-cost command?

Cheers,
Zotigo

Hello
In my opinion the auto cost is better, less work, more accurate! The manual come in handy if you want to prefer a certain path, for some reason.

you should rely on the auto cost..
you just need to set the reference bandwidth in order for ospf to calculate the costs properly.. or esle by default im pretty sure your 100mb, 1gb and 10gb links will all cost the same...

router#config t
router(config)#router ospf (process number)
router(config-router)#auto-cost reference-bandwidth ?
<1-4294967> The reference bandwidth in terms of Mbits per second

im pretty sure youll have to run that command on all of your ospf enabled routers so that they calculate their routes properly from the Link State Database.

Thanks guys.
